2014 SuperBowl XLVIII Ads

Be honest. Do you really watch the Superbowl for the football? Aside from the bad lip reading (above) the ads provide plenty of entertainment.

More than half of the viewers of the Superbowl tune in to watch the commercials, only. Here's a sneak peak at some of the ads that will be airing this Sunday during Superbowl XLVIII.

Just a few things that help make a Superbowl ad happen:

  • A generous budget - A 30-second ad costs approximately $4 million
  • Clever Concept - the ads often incorporate humor, suggestive content, a celebrity endorsement, or all of the above
  • Buzz - the ads will often appear as a teasers, prequels or, sometimes, in the full form weeks before the Superbowl in digital forms, during other televised events and in other social networks.
Some companies have accomplished all three, very successfully. Even if sales don't decrease dramatically, there is certainly a rise in brand awareness. That's really the point, though, isn't it? Here comes the buzz.

Axe PEACE Body Spray - 30 Second Spot

This ad weaves the concept of "Make Love. Not War" into hotbeds of contention worldwide. The result is rather appealing, to any market. Perhaps the company is crediting its potential customers with a bit more brains and cultural awareness, rather than simply sex appeal. Enjoy. Peace.

2014 Toyota Highlander - 60 Second Spot

Terry Crews and The Muppets join together in fine Muppet Show form. The result is very amusing, even if you pay more attention to the beloved furballs than the car.

Hyundai Elantra "Nice" - 30 Second Spot

With Johnny Galecki (of Big Bang Theory and Roseanne) in the driver's seat, this commercial uses some tongue in cheek over the top humor to show off the Hyundai Elantra. Of course with voice overs by The Dude Jeff Bridges, you can't really go wrong.

Dannon Oikos Greek Yogurt - 30 Second Spot

John Stamos is back. However, sexy yogurt lip takes on a whole new meaning when his other Full-House cast members make an appearance. So silly, you just may want to share your yogurt with your nearest ladyfriend, or manfriend, as the case may be.

Wonderful Pistachios with Stephen Colbert - Teaser

It may be a teaser, but he is a master of smart-funny (or funny-smart). Even the teaser is amusing, so we can wait for him to "get crackin'" on game day.

M&Ms - Teaser

The yellow peanut M&M is finally the star, well, until he gets kidnapped. The teaser doesn't reveal much, except that poor yellow loves to dance and then gets abducted. Tune in for more chocolatey goodness.

While there may not be a fantastic rug spot, we will still enjoy sitting back, relaxing, and watching the super bowl of TV spots duke it out. Game on.
