Making Your Rug the Focal Point of Decor

You've heard it here, a thousand times, a rug can be the focal point of your decor.

You've fallen in love with a rug. It is the perfect statement of your style. Now, to make it the focal point of your decor. Whether a family heirloom or a beauty discovered on a whim, the rug speaks to you and you want it to be your room's focal point. Here's some tips for making that possible.

1. Be an Artist - Even though it's great to have a plan, decorating your home definitely relies on your artistic abilities. Don't worry so much about rules, go with what you know and what you love. Break a few rules for the sake of your art.

2. Be Bold - If the colors in your rug are bold, that could be quite enough to make it the focal point of your room. Use a neutral palette for the remaining decor so that the boldness of the rug shines through. Try incorporating the boldness of the rug into other parts of your decor, such as pillows, fabrics, art and other accessories. Don't overpower the rug, but pull the colors from the rug to emphasize the rug as the true focal point.

3. Be Graphic - Mixing patterns is certainly an art. Choosing a rug with a distinctive pattern or design will not only make it a significant focal point, but almost a piece of floor art. Make the intricate design the point from which your decor radiates. To overemphasize your appreciation of the rug's design, use only solid colors for the other aspects of decor. Should you decide to mix patterns, choose those that are completely unlike the pattern in the rug. Too many similar patterns in the room will draw attention away from the rug as the focal point.

4. Be The Center of Attention - If your rug is a treasured family heirloom, or a prized find that has high value (even if only to you), arrange your decor around the rug. The rug should be more than just a backdrop, it should be the star. Make sure that when entering the room and when staying in the room for any length of time, the rug is in full view and is the noticeable center of activity.

5. Be Unique - Diverse textures and non-traditional rug shapes draw attention, particularly when the uniqueness of the rug does not have an equal in the room. Try venturing from your typical decor style or color to make a clear statement. Trying a more eclectic style in contemporary decor, for example, will create an interest in the eclectic piece, as it will stand out from the other decor styles. Mixing modern with traditional, would have the same effect.
