Don't worry about not being able to afford an authentic handmade rug for thousands of dollars. Most people can't. On the plus side, there are other affordable options. Let's take, for example, the Beni Ourain rug. True love in rug form.

Even affordable version of this rug is based on hundreds of years of tradition.

The Beni Ourain is Moroccan in origin. These rugs are made, by hand, by the Beni Ourain tribe, one of the Berber tribes. These rugs are typically dichromatic and very weighted, asthey have a long tradition as tribal blankets and covers. The wool used in these rugs is often of a longer pile in an almost shag-like appearance.

The design of the Beni Ourain rug is very simple, exhibiting black or brown lines that create simple geometric patterns in undyed wool. An authentic, handmade Beni Ourain rug can cost thousands of dollars.

A replica, however, is a small fraction of the cost.

If you love the style, but can't afford the antique price tag, try searching for replicas. The replicas can be just as stylish, but because they are newer and usually not constructed in the same painstaking methods, they are less expensive.

These two rugs from American Rug Craftsmen recreate the look of the Beni Ourain, without the same price tag.
